F.A.Q

Who made this site?
Two lazy 2nd year OCAD students in 2002, Debbie and Chris, and felt there was something missing from OCAD's school life. While we were discussing this matter online around 4am it was decided that we get off our lazy asses and do something about it. So, on Monday September 16th, 2002 MYOCAD was officially launched.

Who else is an admin that can help me with MYOCAD problems and questions?
James, Patrick, and Karen can answer your questions or bring to the rest of the team any concerns you may have about the site.

What the crap is this site about?
It's about you. No. It's FOR you, the OCAD artists.

Why don't I see parts of the site?
MYOCAD uses a whole lot of flash interfaces because.. it was the only way to make the site look and work the way we envisioned MYOCAD to look and feel from the begining. That means you WILL need the latest flash plugin installed on your computer. You can get it fast and free from the MACROMEDIA download site.

Does the site work on Macs????
The site has always worked on PC's because that's what we developed it in. IN the coming months we will work on making it work as good on those motherfriggin Macs as well. For now, I would recommend you use Safari to access the site since it produces the fewest problems. Or better yet, switch to PC.

Why can't I upload my work?
There are probably two reasons why your work is being rejected.
1) Your work is not in an accepted image format ( JPG, JPEG ). Please convert it to one of those and try again. More info on converting can be found below.
2) Your work is over the accepted filesize limit of 500KB (half a megabyte) Please reduce the filesize and try again. More info on reducing filesize can be found below.
Why does my artwork need to be under 500KB?
Because as you might have guessed the MYOCAD staff are just poor students so server space and bandwidth isn't something we can throw around. We are being more than generous in alloting you with 500KB per work of art, and we expect in return that you do your best to submit artwork that is as low in filesize as possible while retaining most of its quality. More info on reducing filesize can be found below.

How can i reduce my artwork's filesize?
Why that's a wonderful question :) and here are some suggestions:
reduce the dpi (dots per inch) resolution to 72.
Since your work is NOT meant to be printed from the site, 72dpi (screen resolution) is perfect for viewing your work on MYOCAD.
reduce the image size to a reasonable LxW screen size
800x600 is a very acceptable size for a landscape image. Going over 1200X1200 is a bit excessive.
save in an image format that results in a lower filesize
Saving your work in GIF, JPEG, or PNG will result in different sizes depending on the image. It's a good idea to test out all three, and choose the one that gives you the best image and lowest filesize. HINT: use GIF for graphic works, and JPG for photo works. PNG also happens to give the best size/picture combination.
You guys need any help?
Shit yea. Although we might seem like we know what we're doing... we could use any help from you to make this site better for the whole student body. Contact us, (by clicking the little mail icon at the top of the site, or emailing one of us) or stop us in the hallway and tell us your ideas/skills/or bitch to us about how friggin slow and crappy MYOCAD is. Any feedback will help us.

I see ads on the site, how does it feel to sell out?
Wonderful. Considering we have put in a whole summer's worth of work, our own time/frustration/funds into making something that OCAD students can benefit from. We thought it would be a good idea to get someone else to pay for bandwidth and server space, because frankly our osap can't cover all that shit.

Is my artwork safe on this site??
The short answer, No. It's not safe anywhere on the internet. If someone wants to steal your work they will. We have gone to great lengths to make sure people see and know that the work they're viewing on the site is YOURS and you hold all rights to the image. This is the price to pay for exposure. Watermarks are an ugly and somewhat effective way of protecting your work. Other than that we cannot stop people from somehow stealing your work from MYOCAD.

Some little fucker has uploaded my work as their own!
First off. Chill, contact us, tell us which submission it is, show us some proof that it is yours, (showing us the original is a pretty good way of showing ownership), and we will work things out. Any member who posts work that is not their own will be dealt with accordingly.

Can I change my username after i sign up?
No.

Can i delete my account?
No, we keep all accounts active.

How can i get people to comment on my art?
It's really easy. You interact on the site. You post messages. You add comments to others' work and people SHOULD comment on yours.

Do you censor the work that people submit?
The site uploads work instantaneously, therefore the work technically doesn't have to pass through us in order to go online..

How can i get my question on here?
Either send one of the two of us an email or MYOCADmail and we will consider it. Stupid questions are much appreciated.

myocad.com is an independent student community for OCAD. That boys and girls happens to stand for Ontario College of Art and Design. The "of" and "and" didn't make it into the acronym, otherwise our website would be called myocoaad.
