Sweek: The Unbelievable Cinematic Crash
Sweek is an active band. Only a year and a half after their debut album The Shooting Star’s Sigh… this Belgian six-piece from the region of Andenne delivers an epic follow up that clocks in at 63 minutes for 6 songs. As this band plays long instrumental tracks and uses violin and cello next to the usual guitars, bass and drums, it could be easily compared to Godspeed You Black Emperor or other post rock trendsetters such as Explosions In The Sky or Mogwai.
But that would be too easy, although these bands are certainly amongst the influences Sweek has used to brew their own sound. It is hard to pick a song out of the six tracks on this album. Tequila Fitness Club, for instance, the longest track on this album (16:26) has so much different musical ànd emotional atmospheres. From slow to up tempo, from rage to melancholy, from sorrow to hope.
Some tracks have guest musicians: Han Stubbe (known from DAAU) plays clarinet on the wonderful Iki, the track that, when it starts off, probably resembles the higher mentioned Godspeed You Black Emperor the most, since it has this typical slow silent start to burst open into a richer sound somewhere in the middle of the song. Yet again, there is more to it, as suddenly this track gets hastier and full up tempo, and after only 5 of the 11 minutes several different atmospheres and influences already have passed. My favourite track, wonderfully entitled A Dead Sleeping Forest, has some of the most melancholic passages of this album, only to be heavily interrupted by outbursts of rage and screaming guitars. Trust Me puts an end to this album, starting off with feelings of anguish by using quiet samples of voices and screams overlapped by silent percussion, but a swinging violin takes over and this album ends in hope.
Sweek plays a soundtrack to images of rural landscapes that turn quickly into overbuilt towns, and at the same time to a trip down your own emotions. If this band was Canadian or American, I’m sure they would be amongst the most popular post rock bands as those I mentioned before.
(a review from another website: said basically what i wanted to say)
hahahahah you didn't even write this! fucking brilliant! ha. ha. ha.
myocad.com is an independent student community for OCAD. That boys and girls happens to stand for Ontario College of Art and Design. The "of" and "and" didn't make it into the acronym, otherwise our website would be called myocoaad.
