i just reread my post... it sounds a lot more depressing than it is... but I hardly ever get into that terrible pinched state i used to get when everynight was unbearable.

yeah, it's hard to find the motivation to paint...the trick is, if you think you might not be able to fall asleep, don't even try...PLAN to paint and start doing it shortly before you would normally try to sleep, that way you will already be painting, and won't have to get motivated...and lot's of coffee, maybe some chocolate, and gooooood good music

I get up and do something. I ususally write music on my computer. it gives me something to do for several hours while i wait to get sleepy.
you could try making yourself a CD of binaural beats?
just pitchbend one side of the audio down by 20hz, and have it slowly fade to being only 1 hz down near the end of the CD.
the sound must be at least 20 minutes, the longer the better. headphones must be used, speakers won't work. the theory is that the difference in frequency comming in each ear will be noticed by your brain, and your brain will start to synch up with the audio, turning you into a very sleepy person, or a person with a terrible headache.

ribosome:
i can relate to your pain. 2 summers ago, I worked midnights in a factory. my shit was from 10:45pm to 6:45am. i got home at 7:15, and woke up around 1 pm, where i would paint untill 9:00pm, eat dinner, then head out to work.
i did this for 4 months. it really threw me off. factory work sucks. (and for the record, most honda parts and GM parts are EXACTLY the same.)
i find i have to completly exhaust myself before i can sleep. either creativly or physically. and masturbation isn't quite physical enough to tire me out. (untill i get to round 3. that one takes a while.)

yea i usually take shits from 10:45 pm - 6:45 am as well. I have a perma toilet bowl ring around my ass.

during hell week: navy seals only get 4 hours of sleep total. to deal with this inability to sleep, they take 30 min power naps, rise, and keep going. suck it up, soldiers.
Mar 18 2006 2:47pm
Soldiers! Look man, we're not soldiers were art students and if we had nothing to bitch and whine about art would cease to exist.

"during hell week: navy seals only get 4 hours of sleep total"
during crit week: Art students only get 4 hours of sleep total.
to deal with this inability to sleep, they drink obscene amounts of coffee.

Mar 19 2006 7:44pm
I take melatonin.

Mar 20 2006 1:18am
It's amazing how many people posted on this thread. FOr me it's never as bad, but it often happens that it takes me a long time to fall asleep. I usually get a lot of ideas at that time.
Mar 20 2006 7:52am
I usually get up and watch some tv to make myself forget whatever is racing through my mind. Or I waste some time on here :)
Mar 20 2006 8:08am
I usually think of a random, outrageous, amusing story and I'll keep playing it out in my mind until I feel tierdness slip in.
Or y'know listen to my iPod tracks. hum a tune.
I dance in my sleep. woo!
It doesn't get me to sleep fast, but ....hell it works for me.
I don't really command myself to fall asleep. I just let it come to me...
Mar 21 2006 12:02am
come on myocad? heh heh
"does anybody else's family use that expression...when you get in the habit of staying up all night so you stay up like 2 days in a row to force your sleep pattern back to nights?
anyone?"
yeah and it doesn't work too well, i get used to being up and start hearing people wispering.
chugging an alcoholic beverage works for me.

im trying to figure out how to create/find binaural sound in the alpha range....

the alpha range is 8 to 12 hz. so if you pitch bend one side of a stereo sound by 8 to 12 hz.
the problem is that when your wide awake, your brain is probably in the beta state (12 to 30 hz)
think of using binaural beats as a dimmer switch, not an on off switch.
if your brain is running at 30 hz, listening to beats at 8hz wont do much. but if your brain is running at 30 hz, and the beats also start at 30hz, and slowly fade down to 8hz, then your brain will slow down with it.
if you dont have audition, do a quick google search, you will eventually find a binaural beat genorator program with a few pre-sets, probably a meditation aid, a sleep aid, and a study aid.
i like turning existing albums into binaural beats. there is something wonderful about using nin's 'broken' ep as a way to put yourself to sleep..

yes i found all this info online. getting a program to create and burn a cd of the sounds is the hard part (relatively)
i have a series of examples i downloaded from the internet, but ill look up the program your talking about.
i just downloaded cool edit, which is supposed to be for creating this sort of thing. i have yet to use it.
"the problem is that when your wide awake, your brain is probably in the beta state (12 to 30 hz)"
haha, haven't been in that state much since oh....about a year now. im always in high theta, low Alpha. i want to bring myself up to high alpha, low beta.

cool edit will work great.
adobie bought cool edit, and turned it into audition. they are pretty much the same program, only audition has the adobie loading screen and takes up more space on a hard drive.
Mar 23 2006 1:53am
i can't get it to work on mac...this sucks.
edit: the binaural .sbg tape that is.

myocad.com is an independent student community for OCAD. That boys and girls happens to stand for Ontario College of Art and Design. The "of" and "and" didn't make it into the acronym, otherwise our website would be called myocoaad.
